Three years ago, three children where brought into the courts as abandoned children. Among them was an eight month old baby. As the senior person at the time, Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan became involved in the case. She was successful in find a home for two of the children, that is, the Christ Child Orphanage, but as for the baby, which she later named Jasmine, she took her home.
Among the legal fraternity there has been talk about the illegal nature in which this adoption took place. The normal processing would have required the child been sent to a home, or first look for a relative who would be willing to look after the child. But, however, Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan allowed her heart to rule in this matter and took the baby home with her. Although what she did was legally wrong, it was morally right as it resulted in a decision that benefited of the child.
The Magistrate has even taken it upon herself to convert her childhood home into a home for abandoned and abused children and the elderly. She hopes to bring Jasmine’s siblings to the home, because she wants to insure that the children are taken care of and that they can maintain a relationship with each other.
To me this is just a wonderful story; a good news story from T&T for a change. We should be celebrating the fact that this little girl was awarded a childhood filled with love and care. And we should also celebrate Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan, a woman with a heart of gold.
