I just want to say “good luck” to the activist group at the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) who is attempting to promote abstinence. Abstinence is believed to be the only 100% effective method of preventing unwanted pregnancies and avoiding sexually transmitted infections. But to many of us this is one of the most difficult methods to implement.
The first issue that arises out of the term abstinence is that it means different things to different people. For HIV prevention and other public health purposes, abstinence may be defined as refraining from practicing sexual activities that involve vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse. While for others, abstinence means voluntarily refraining from all sexual acts (yes all, that includes kissing and fondling), because of moral or religious beliefs.
The group from USC has adopted the later perspective in their campaign. But within our society fewer and fewer people are succeeding at or even attempting to abstain till marriage. If USC students are promoting, that we as a society should abstain from sex, maybe they would be more successful if their focus was on bringing people to Christ rather than teaching abstinence. Now I am fully aware that the “power of God” is a component of the teachings that USC is promoting. But rather than the focus be on refraining from sex with the help of God, maybe their teachings should be, come into a personal relationship with God and obey his commandments, one of which we all know is “Thou shall not fornicate”. Because in attempting to abstain from sex we need God!
For all of you who are coming up short for the glory of God, just like myself, it may not be such a bad idea to seek after God. But in the mean time it is just as effective having sexual intercourse with only one uninfected and faithful partner, but this is only successful if it is practiced consistently by both partners in the relationship (there in lies some difficulty). And one last thing having a series of monogamous relationships is not a safe prevention strategy, ok!
