Trading Sorrow For Joy

A man who holds the title of lawn cutter in his home town of Sangre Grande, now holds the title of Chutney Soca Monarch winner for 2009. Kenneth Salick earned more than 11,000 votes with his song “Radica” and toke home the grand prize of $200,000.

Salick explained that the song came about as a result of a break up with his now separated wife 16 years ago. This break, he said, was the consequence of his own unfaithfulness. Out of the heart ache of that break up Salick has received a great honour “Chutney Soca Monarch winner for 2009”.

He admits that he was surprise when the announcement was made that he had won. He said “The song is a true story. We (he and wife, Radica) done about 16 years now and I leave she dey in de house, so now I want to get my own. We does talk and thing like normal, but that time done pass and we move on with we lives. We have seven children together doh, so she does still come by we and wash and thing, so we normal.” He believes the truth in the sound is what caused him to win the competition.

This was the first year that the Chutney Soca Monarch used the method of judging, where by, the fans text in their vote for their favorite chutney soca artist and thus determined the outcome. And the top 10 results are as follows:-

    hear na im so proud of kenny….. im frm grande and i voted him i can see the pain and sufferin he and his family had been going tru and now there is no more of that……….. all thanks to radica but she dont deserve nothing……………………………….

      Why you being so judgemental, you forget it was Kenneth who cheat on her and cause their marriage to break up.. he could do what ever he
      want because he deserve a break and happiness with his family.. Kenneth you done well, keep it up..
