The differences in Obama’s recent visit to Prague in Europe and his upcoming visit to Trinidad and Tobago is not solely the change in temperature and atmosphere, but more important is the different roles he has to play in both situations. Obama went to Europe to discuss and seek assistance in resolving the world economic crisis and the war in Afghanistan, but in the Fifth Summit of the America set to take place over the next five days, Obama would be the one with all the answers and power to disappoint or deliver.
Like something out of Obama’s campaign speech is the themes for the upcoming Summit which include; securing our citizens’ future by promoting human prosperity, energy usage, regional and global security, and environmental stability. But the major issue is what the US intend to do to prevent the economic crisis from jeopardizing the growth that has taken place in this region in the last five years. Thus far, Latin America has managed to keep the worst of the economic crisis at bay. Hence there would be much interest in how soon Obama can devise a stabilization plan, because one of the best indicators of potential global recovery may be the ability of developed Western hemisphere countries to put a stop to economic collapse.
Obviously then, Obama is set to be the star of the show. Obama’s decision to lift restrictions on U.S. engagement with Cuba will only assist in heightening his popularity in the region. Obama’s visit to the region is creating an atmosphere of optimism because he represents change; but there are other new point-of-views to be offered at this summit as 11 of the 34 head of states attending the summit are also new presidents.
